Dark social is the private sharing of links and content through messaging apps, email, direct messages and copied links. Many of these shares arrive with no referral data, and analytics tools count those visits as direct traffic instead of crediting social.

Why dark social matters

Your audience shares your content all day. They do it where you can’t see it.

Someone pastes your link into WhatsApp, Messenger, Slack, Discord, an email, a text or direct messages on a social media platform. The click arrives with no source attached. When that happens, your reports log it as direct, not social.

The data proves it. In a 2023 SparkToro experiment, “100% of all visits from TikTok, Slack, Discord, Mastodon, and WhatsApp were marked as ‘direct'” in analytics. The same test found 75% of Facebook Messenger visits had no referral data.

SparkToro ran the test with a panel of about 100 people, mostly in the US and Canada. While it’s a small test, it proves how private sharing conceals your true reach. Taking direct traffic at face value guarantees you’re undercounting social’s business impact.

That gap weakens the social ROI story you bring to leadership. Close it with a stronger social media attribution strategy.

Dark social vs. direct traffic

Direct traffic is an analytics bucket, and dark social is one of the primary sources filling it.

Google Analytics defines direct traffic as the “(direct) / (none)” source and medium, which “represents website traffic that doesn’t have a clear referral source.” Google lists typed URLs, links in offline documents, missing UTM tags and redirects among the causes. SparkToro’s test found many private shares land there too.

Tracked referral traffic works the other way. The visit retains its source data, allowing you to see which site drove the traffic.

You can pull a significant portion of that sharing back into the light. Because Google lists missing UTM tags as a primary cause of direct traffic, adding UTM codes to every link restores your attribution data. Run each link through a URL shortener so it’s easy to paste, and ensure the short link retains its UTM tags.

SparkToro recommends unique tracked URLs, too. However, since audiences rarely use them when sharing privately, tagging only recovers a fraction of your dark social traffic.
