Twitter has launched a new email newsletter campaign as a way to encourage participation on the platform.
Currently the company offers a weekly digest email, which aggregates relevant tweets you might have missed — similar to its Discover tab. Twitter’s latest initiative will focus on People You May Know.
Using signals like who your friends follow and contact information imported by friends, People You May Know will recommend a “handful” of members you can choose to follow.
This could be a useful way to draw in members that have been lying dormant. After all, Twitter really only shines once you start following relevant accounts. As The Next Web pointed out, getting eyes on Twitter is the most important thing for advertisers, even if a majority of them are just looking rather than tweeting.
For businesses, this could return some valuable connections that you might have missed otherwise. Of course, only time will tell how relevant Twitter’s suggestions are.
It appears that members are now receiving the People You May Know newsletter by default. You can control which emails you receive through Settings > Email Notifications.
