If you’re hearing noises when you visit Facebook, it’s not your ears playing tricks. The social network has started testing a new sound for notifications.
Currently, Facebook notifications are displayed below the globe icon along the toolbar. A small red box and a number will appear when your Page or content receives a Like or comment. Now, each alert is accompanied by a sound — you can hear it in the video below.
Turned on a few days ago, the test has been rolled out for only a small group of members. While the new sound could be helpful for some, depending on the popularity of your Page or content, it could become annoying for others. Fortunately it’s easy to turn it off.
To make changes, access your Account Settings and select Notifications. From there, click “View” on the top tab and uncheck the box that says “Play a sound when each new notification is received.”
Meredith Chin, Facebook manager of corporate communications, told VentureBeat that this feature is “currently just a test.” We don’t have any other information regarding whether the sound will be released to more members.
