The Universal Feed Size
Every social media platform has its own image specs. Get them wrong and the visuals behind your social media content strategy show up blurry and cropped. This guide gives you the exact social media image sizes and post sizes for every major platform in 2026.
Your visual identity is often the first interaction a potential customer has with your brand. A strong visual strategy makes that first impression count and getting your dimensions right is where it starts.
The right tools make resizing images across platforms fast. Use Landscape, Sprout Social’s free image resizing tool, to resize a single image for all social media sizes at once.

Why do social media image sizes matter?
Social media image sizes are the pixel dimensions, aspect ratios and file limits each platform uses to display profile photos, cover images and posts. Match them and your visuals stay sharp and uncropped.
Miss them and the platform makes the call for you. Wrong sizes signal to your audience that your brand doesn’t sweat the details. Here’s what happens:
- Cropping: The platform trims logos and text at the edges
- Compression: Fine detail turns soft and blurry
- Letterboxing: Mismatched ratios leave empty space around your image
- Rejection: Some uploads fail outright
Scheduling tools publish through platform APIs, which enforce stricter limits than the apps. Instagram’s API, for example, accepts feed images between 4:5 and 1.91:1 and nothing outside that range.
Data from our 2025 Content Benchmarks Report shows images account for 48% of all brand content on Facebook. Static images are still the workhorse format, so sizing them right protects most of your output and preserves your brand identity.
Social media image sizes cheat sheet
This cheat sheet gives you the essential social media image sizes for every major platform at a glance, with profile image, cover image and primary post image all in one place.
These are the baseline specs for 2026. Publishing the wrong size means blurry visuals and automatic cropping.
| Platform | Profile image | Cover image | Primary post image |
| 110×110 px | N/A | 1080×1080 px or 1080×1350 px | |
| 320×320 px | 851×315 px | 1080×1350 px | |
| X (formerly known as Twitter) | 400×400 px | 1500×500 px | 1600×900 px |
| 400×400 px | 4200×700 px | 1200×627 px | |

| Threads | 320×320 px | N/A | 1080×1080 px |
| Bluesky | 400×400 px | 1500×1500 px | 1080×1080 px |
| Google My Business | 720×720 px | 1024×576 px | 1200×900 px |
Each platform has additional format requirements, including Stories, Reels, banners and more, which are covered in the full sections below cover.
What image size works on every platform?
One 1080-pixel-wide image covers most feeds. Pick the ratio that fits the placement:
- 1080 x 1080 pixels (1:1): Works across Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Threads and Bluesky feeds
- 1080 x 1350 pixels (4:5): Wins more vertical space in mobile feeds
- 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16): Covers Stories, Reels, TikTok photo mode, Snapchat and YouTube Shorts
- 1000 x 1500 pixels (2:3): Pinterest’s recommended size and the one exception to the 1080-pixel rule
Use JPG for photos to keep files small and PNG for graphics with text, logos or sharp edges. Upload the highest-quality file within each platform’s limit and let the platform do the compressing. Keep key text and logos away from the edges so circular crops and UI overlays don’t hide them.
Facebook image sizes
Facebook remains one of the most widely used social media platforms for brand content. Getting your social media image dimensions right ensures your visuals display crisp and professional across every device and placement.

Feed and carousel posts are the foundation of your Instagram presence. Instagram now supports the native 3:4 aspect ratio that most phone cameras capture by default, displaying images at their native size rather than stretching them to fit.

- On-screen display size: 161×201 pixels
- Recommended image width: 1080 pixels

- Recommended aspect ratio: 9:16 (grid view always displays at 3:4)
- Grid view size: 1080×1440 pixels

- Note on captions: While you can include a URL in your feed ad caption (up to 63,000 characters), it will not be clickable. To drive traffic to a website, you should use the designated call-to-action button (like “Learn More” or “Shop Now”) provided in the ad setup.
Instagram Story image ad sizes
Instagram Story ads are full-screen, vertical ads that appear between users’ organic Stories. This engaging format suits temporary, interactive content that captures immediate attention.

- File formats: JPG or PNG
Snapchat’s interface overlays navigation elements at the top and bottom of every screen. Place your logo, calls to action and key visuals inside the safe zone so nothing important disappears behind the UI.

FAQs about social media image sizes
What image size works on every social media platform?
A 1080 x 1080 pixel square covers most feeds, and 1080 x 1920 pixels fits vertical Stories and Reels. Pinterest is the exception and prefers 1000 x 1500 pixels.
What is the best image size for an Instagram post in 2026?
Use 1080 x 1350 pixels at a 4:5 portrait ratio. The app also takes 3:4 photos, but scheduled posts must stay between 4:5 and 1.91:1.
What are the recommended image sizes for Facebook in 2026?
Use 320 x 320 pixels for your profile picture and 851 x 315 pixels for your cover photo. Feed posts work best at 1080 x 1350 pixels and Stories at 1080 x 1920 pixels.
What happens if you post an image with the wrong dimensions?
The platform crops, compresses, letterboxes or rejects it. That’s how you lose logos and text at the edges before anyone reads your post.
What file format is best for social media images?
Use JPG for photos and PNG for text-heavy graphics and logos. Keep every file under the platform’s size limit.
Is it better to use 4:3 or 16:9 for social media images?
Match the ratio to the placement. Wide formats suit banners and video thumbnails, while taller or square formats dominate mobile feeds by taking up more screen real estate. Use 16:9 for YouTube cover photos and landscape placements and 4:5 or 1:1 for Instagram and Facebook feed posts.
How often do social media image size specs change?
Constantly. Platforms update layouts, placements and ad formats without warning, which is exactly why you need a current reference guide rather than relying on memory. Bookmark this page and check back whenever a platform announces a redesign.
Can I use the same image across all social media platforms?
One image rarely fits every placement well, so resize intentionally to make your creative feel native on each platform. Use Landscape to resize a single asset for every platform in seconds rather than rebuilding from scratch.
