Social media comments are an important way for brands to interact with their audience, whether to address customer service issues or build brand loyalty. The options and best practices for comments vary across platforms. Read on to learn more about how to manage comments for Facebook and Instagram.

Facebook Comments

A Facebook comment lets you respond to a post or picture on Facebook.

To comment on a Facebook post, click Comment underneath the post, or click into the white box that says, “Write a Comment.” Type what you want to say and press enter to publish the message.

The basics of Facebook Comments

A Facebook comment is one of three ways that customers or followers can engage with a brand or individual on Facebook. The other two options are to “Share” the post with friends, or “Like” the post. Facebook offers a number of emoji reactions alongside the “Like” today, including Love, Anger, Sad and Wow.

With Sprout Social, businesses can view and reply to threaded comments within their social media management dashboard.

Comments are one of the best forms of engagement for any company, because they indicate that your follower has taken the time to think about and write a response to your content. This is a much more active form of engagement than clicking the “like” button.

Who sees your Facebook Comment?

One of the best ways for brands to connect with their target audience on Facebook is to comment on their posts. When you respond to a Facebook Comment, anyone who can see the original post will also be able to see your comment.

For most brands, this means that comments are “Public”. If you see the small globe icon next to your post, this means that anyone with a Facebook account will see what you’ve written.

Since social media is a powerful word of mouth marketing tool, it’s important to ensure that the comments on your Facebook page and the messages you leave on other pages, represent your brand in a positive way. If someone leaves a negative or spammy Facebook Comment on one of your posts, it may be a good idea to hide that message to preserve your brand reputation.

To hide a Facebook comment, hover over the comment, click the three dots and select Hide Comment. You could also delete the comment from your page.

Importantly, you should only hide Facebook comments that are offensive or spammy. Negative messages about your brand might be upsetting, but they’re also a great opportunity to show your customer service skills.

How to encourage more Facebook Comments

The Facebook Comment is a powerful part of your social media engagement strategy.

As the Facebook algorithm continues to prioritize authentic connections between users, comments are your chance to spark conversations with your target audience. To encourage people to leave messages on your Facebook posts, try:

  • Asking questions: Questions are the most efficient way to get a conversation started. When you post something on Facebook, add an interesting question to prompt discussion.
  • Start a discussion: Get people talking about a trending topic by giving your opinion and inviting them to share their own.
  • Reply to your followers: When people do leave a Facebook comment on your posts, respond to them to keep the conversation going.

Instagram comments

An Instagram Comment is one of the two ways that people engage with the content they see on Instagram. The other option is to simply like the post.

Comments are often a more sought-after form of engagement for Instagram marketers, influencers and brands. While anyone can leave a like by double-tapping a photo, a comment is a more active form of engagement that requires genuine effort from your follower.

It’s possible to publish your first Instagram Comment alongside your IG post on Sprout Social, so you may add extra hashtags into your post and make your content more visible. Businesses can then use Sprout to track the impact of their Instagram posts.

How to leave an Instagram Comment

Leaving an Instagram comment on a post is simple.

  • Open your Instagram app and sign into your account.
  • Browse for the photo or video you want to comment on
  • Tap on the photo to open it
  • Click the Comment button located underneath the picture and type your message
  • Hit the Enter button.

On an IGTV video finding the Instagram comment section is harder because the video takes up the full screen. Tap the screen to make the menu appear and click the comment button like you would on any Instagram post.

How to edit or delete an Instagram Comment

The comments that you leave on Instagram have a direct impact on your brand reputation. Fortunately, you can delete or edit your comments if you notice a typo. Tap on the comment button and swipe left and Trash symbol to remove the comment.

To edit your message, tap the three dots next to your post and click on Edit.

To hide an offensive comment that someone else leaves on your page, go to your Instagram profile and tap on the Gear icon.

In the Settings menu, tap Comments.

There’s a section here where you can toggle “Hide Inappropriate Comments” on and off. This will allow the app to automatically hide comments containing phrases that are considered to be offensive. You can also customize your experience to hide other keywords that you find offensive.

How to encourage Instagram Comments

As an essential component of social media engagement, the Instagram comment is something that you want to cultivate on your profile. Although there’s no one-size-fits-all way to accelerate Instagram growth, it’s possible to improve your chances of comments by:

  • Posting at peak times: Use Instagram Insights and Sprout Social to find out when your audience is most likely to be online, then time your posts to fit that schedule.
  • Posting content that provokes a response: Use compelling and interesting content to naturally draw commentary out of your target audience.
  • Using your captions: Add questions to your captions that encourage people to respond. Remember to @mention anyone who might get the conversation started.
  • Reply to comments: Keep the conversation going when someone does leave a message on your post.
