Sprout Social’s 2026 Influencer Marketing Report finds influencer reach extends far beyond followers, suggesting the brands that succeed will evolve how they select creator partnerships.

CHICAGO – August 3, 2026 – What makes an influencer partnership successful is undergoing a fundamental shift. According to Sprout Social’s 2026 Influencer Marketing Report released today, influencer content is reaching well beyond a creator’s own following, suggesting brands stand to see the biggest returns in awareness and revenue by partnering with creators who understand not just their niche audience, but how to fit meaningfully into the wider platform and cultural environment.

As social networks prioritize interest-driven feeds, reach has become decoupled from audience size. In fact, a large majority (60%) of Instagram Reels now reach audiences where more than 70% of viewers are non-followers, underscoring how far a creator’s real influence can extend beyond their subscriber count. At the same time, only 17% of consumers say they consider follower count when deciding to follow a creator, favoring topical alignment and community relevance instead.

This is a timely moment for marketers to rethink their approach. Half of all companies (50%) still deploy creators primarily for “brand awareness,” often using follower count as a simple, if outdated, proxy for who to partner with. But as discovery increasingly follows topical lines, brands have room to evolve both who they partner with and how they measure success. The upside is real: 81% of Gen Z consumers made a direct purchase based on an influencer recommendation this past year, and 75% of marketers are already increasing influencer budgets in response. Yet only 24% of companies design campaigns around revenue outcomes, leaving most of that new investment measured against awareness alone.

“Influencer marketing has evolved into a true revenue driver for brands, but unlocking that bottom-line impact requires a smarter strategic approach that aligns with today’s platforms and audience preferences,” said Scott Morris, Chief Marketing Officer at Sprout Social. “The future of this channel isn’t about chasing reach through follower counts. It’s about finding creators who deeply understand their niche audience and also know how to fit relevantly into the broader cultural moment. When brands partner with creators like that, awareness and revenue potential can grow exponentially.”

Follower count aside, the report highlights several key trends defining how brands should approach influencer strategies:

  • Authenticity remains a dealbreaker: More than 80% of consumers believe influencers should use products they promote, and 44% believe they should be long-term users of a product before endorsing it.
  • Employee influencers are on the rise: 40% of consumers and 62% of Gen Z now discover new products through employee-generated content at least once a month.
  • The public is skeptical of AI influencers: 44% of consumers are not comfortable with brands partnering with AI influencers, while another 30% say it depends on the context.
  • Identifying the right creators remains a challenge: Finding creators who align with their target audience (42%) and brand values (41%) are companies’ top challenges in influencer marketing, with measuring ROI (38%) ranking third.
