[UPDATED 8.11.14]

Sharing the video content that you create is one of the most important things you can do for your brand online. One of the easiest ways to do this is by using YouTube.

That’s why we put together this article which will show you how to upload a video to YouTube from your desktop, iPhone, iPad, Android device, email and Xbox One.

YouTube Upload Limit

YouTube takes just about any video format available today, so you probably don’t have to worry about the file type you’re uploading. Here is a list of all of the formats they accept:

  • .MOV
  • .MPEG4
  • MP4
  • .AVI
  • .WMV
  • .FLV
  • 3GPP
  • WebM

If you’re using a different format than any of these, you can use the troubleshooter at this link to learn how to convert your file.

As far as length goes, when you initially create your YouTube account you’ll be limited to 15 minute uploads. If you want to upload videos longer than this you’ll have to verify your YouTube account. After you’ve done this, you’ll be able to upload videos up to 128GB in size and 11 hours in length!

Uploading a Video to YouTube on Desktop

The first step is to sign in to YouTube with any Google account or to create a new account. Once you’ve signed in, you can upload a video from anywhere on the site by clicking on the “Upload” link at the top right-hand side of the page near the search bar.

YouTube Upload Screen

Once you click the “Upload” button you’ll be directed to a page with a screen similar to this:

Here you can either click the arrow icon and choose a video from your computer to upload to the site, or drag the video directly onto the page. If you don’t already have a video that you want to upload you can create one with a webcam directly from this screen.

Filling Out Additional Information

As your video is uploading you’ll have access to the screen below where you can choose your privacy settings and add additional information.

Here are some of the fields you should consider filling out before publishing your video:

  • Video Title
  • Video Description
  • Video Tags
  • Choose a Thumbnail for Your Video (or upload a custom thumbnail up to 2mb big)
  • Choose Your Video Privacy Setting (public, unlisted, or private)
  • Add a Message to Your Video for Social Sharing
  • Choose Whether or Not to Allow Comments and Ratings
  • Choose a Video Category
  • Choose a Video Location
  • Choose a Video Language

Once YouTube has finished uploading the video you’ll receive an email alerting you that uploading and processing is complete. You can also change these notification settings here.
