A shadow ban happens when a social media platform hides or limits the reach of your account or content without notifying you. It shows up as a sharp drop in your social media engagement and fewer appearances in public feeds.

The concept gained popularity around 2018, when conservative account owners alleged that X (formerly known as Twitter) was shadow banning them.

The platform denied shadow banning in a July 2018 blog post, but acknowledged that its algorithms rank posts. In 2023, X said it uses “visibility filtering” to restrict the reach of posts that break its rules, short of removing them. Even without a formal shadow ban, an algorithm can quietly shrink your content’s public exposure.

Comment savoir si votre compte est concerné ?

  • Engagement on your content has dropped. If you’ve noticed your content is receiving fewer likes and comments, fewer people are seeing it.
  • Your posts aren’t showing up on public feeds. If your posts aren’t showing up on the explore pages or hashtag searches, you’re missing out on engagement and new followers.

Comment empêcher le « shadow banning » de vos contenus ?

  • Follow the terms of service. If you suspect a shadow ban, audit your account against the platform’s terms to ensure you aren’t in violation.
  • Don’t spam content. Social media algorithms don’t like seeing the same thing over and over again. Experiment with different types of content and themes.
  • Audit your hashtags. Make sure you are using hashtags that are relevant to your content and aren’t using any banned hashtags.

What to do if you’ve been shadow banned

  • Review the platform’s guidelines. Check the community guidelines and terms of service for any rules your recent posts may have broken. Remove or edit any content that violates them.
  • Pause your activity for a few days. Some restrictions are temporary. Stop posting, following and liking for 24 to 48 hours to see if your reach returns to normal.
  • Switch to a business account. If you’re on a personal account, a business account gives you access to native analytics, so you can see if your impressions and reach have dropped.
  • Appeal the decision or contact support. If you believe the platform restricted your account by mistake, submit an appeal or contact support through the app’s help center.
  • Keep posting high-quality content. Once you’ve fixed any issues, return to a consistent schedule and focus on original posts that spark real conversation with your audience.
