Verified accounts on Twitter, which are primarily brands and celebrities, no longer have to follower a user to receive a direct message from them.

The requirement to follow someone before being able to receive a direct message from them was Twitter’s way of protecting accounts from unwanted spam. But due to the overwhelming popularity of certain accounts, following everyone interested isn’t always feasible.

There was no official announcement of this new feature, but it was spotted over the weekend and quickly verified by multiple verified account holders.

This is a long promised perk from being a verified account which is part of the Twitter Business Center service that began rolling out last year.
