Facebook Adds Upcoming Events, Recently Released Albums to News Feed
Last month, Facebook began testing an “upcoming concerts” module in News Feeds. Now it appears the social network is expanding the test to include upcoming events and recently released albums.
Event recommendations previously appeared on members’ events calendars; however, individuals were less likely to discover them since this page isn’t visited very often. We don’t expect that this will clutter News Feeds much, as only certain events will make the cut. Facebook is basing suggestions off of a member’s location, Liked Pages, and friends’ plans.
Musicians on Facebook will likely benefit from the new music-related module that features a recently released album. Currently it chooses artists based on who members have listened to on Spotify — it’s not clear whether this also includes listening habits on Rdio. An earlier study reported that musicians favor Facebook over other social networks, quite possibly because of Open Graph and opportunities like this one to receive more exposure within the platform.
Inside Facebook also pointed out that this opens up Facebook to additional advertising opportunities. ”For instance, there could be a ‘Happy Hour’ module for bars and restaurants or ‘Ongoing Sales’ for retailers or online stores. Businesses could pay to be featured among other organic recommendations.”
At this time, Facebook hasn’t mentioned any plans regarding sponsored modules. We imagine the company will gauge how popular these recommendations are before moving forward.
