Goodbye Invites: Pinterest Opens Its Doors to the Public

After two years of requiring an invite, Pinterest has finally opened its doors to the public enabling anyone to sign up.

Previously, anyone who wanted to join had to request an invite and wait. Now, you can now register for the social network using your email address, or log in with your Twitter or Facebook accounts.

Open registration follows a minor redesign released last week. While it won’t change the way you use the service, Pinterest updated the interface that you use to add pins and made it easier to share to Facebook.

Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social networks online. Having already surpassed Twitter, Bing, and StumbleUpon in referral traffic, the site is positioned to overtake Yahoo in August.

Despite having a closed registration, Pinterest is still seeing explosive growth. In May, comScore revealed that the site has seen 4,377 percent year over year growth. That kind of gain could also lead to challenges. For one, now that anyone can join, Pinterest might see a boost in spam, which could affect the overall user experience.

Several businesses have already integrated Pinterest into their social media strategy, and many are seeing results. Whether you’re looking to share additional insights with your customers or just create a visual resource for your team, it’s worth taking Pinterest for a spin.
