Twitter Tip Tuesday is a weekly blog series from Sprout Social Insights.

Now that we have that out of the way, here is the sixth thing to do after you create your Twitter account.

Find People to Follow

You’ve got your Twitter account set up, with a stellar picture and bio. You’ve created your first 10 tweets, and you’re feeling pretty good about your presence on Twitter. Now, it’s time to find interesting and relevant people to follow. Fortunately, Twitter has made this step very easy thanks to its “Who To Follow” tab.

In the top right corner of your Twitter home page, just to the right of your Messages tab, click “Who To Follow.”

Twitter will list a number of people that it thinks you should follow, based on the people you’re already following “and more” (the “and more” criteria is not specified by Twitter). From this screen, among other things, you can click the “Follow” button to follow any of the suggested Twitter accounts or click on the silhouette icon to add an account to a Twitter list.

Browse Interests

Next, click the “Browse Interests” tab. Twitter lists a variety of topics by default, along with a number of suggested Twitter accounts associated with each topic. Click the “View all” link to see all of the accounts Twitter suggests for each topic.

If none of the default topics strike your fancy, type a keyword of your choice in the “Search by name or topic” field, then click the “Search” button to see the results. You can also use this field to search for people in your town, city, or state.

Find Friends

Finally, use the “Find Friends” tab to discover friends from other platforms who are also using Twitter. Click the “Search Contacts” button next to the Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail & Messenger, AOL, and LinkedIn icons; you’ll be asked to login to the respective service so that Twitter can search for friends to connect with. In each of the platforms, you’ll be given the option to see who you are already following on Twitter and to follow people you haven’t connected with yet. This can be a great way to deepen relationships and extend the social media conversation from one platform to another.

If you simply want to invite people to Twitter via email, there’s an option to “Invite Friends” in the lower-right corner of the Find Friends page.

In the field titled “Your friend’s email address”, type the email address of the friend you’d like to invite to Twitter. If you’d like to invite multiple friends, add additional email addresses separated by commas. You can preview what your email invitation will look like by clicking the “See what you’ll send them” link. When you’re ready to send your email invitations, click the “Invite” button just to the right of the input field.

Start with People You Already Know

It’s no accident that Twitter’s “Who To Follow” infrastructure is designed to search for people and topics you’re already familiar with. Just like in the offline world, networking with people you already know is a great way to start expanding your sphere of influence.

As you interact with existing friends and followers, you’ll see plenty of opportunities to connect with people from their existing networks. Before long, you’ll be making new friends and finding followers relevant to your interests and your industry.
