Twitter can send you notifications by email when someone follows you or sends you a direct message. This week, the social networking service announced additional settings that allows it to notify you when someone you follow retweets or favorites one of your Tweets.

Rolling out now, the new options aren’t yet available to everyone. It’s also not clear if they apply only to those you follow as announced. Reports are surfacing that email notifications work for anyone who retweets or favorites one of your Tweets.

The new settings arrive automatically turned on, so if you don’t want the email spam, you will have to turn them off manually. Simple click on your Twitter name in the upper right hand corner of your Twitter web page, select “Settings” and then the “Notifications” tab. From there you can select what kinds of email notifications to receive.

However, it’s considered good social media practice to acknowledge those that retweet and favorite your Tweets and this new notification system is a great way to keep track of those people.
