These are very valid points regarding "Search Plus Your World." Unfortunately (for Google) that is precisely one of the big problems. "Search Plus Your World" has been extremely controversial (Search Engine Land is full of scathing critiques).

Personally, my view is that "Search Plus Your World" in many ways harms Google's position, because it's search engine will no longer be returning "the most relevant" results but rather those which have been "socially weighted." Their argument is that the social aspect makes it more relevant than the individual, but the reality has shown that more often than not it is not the case. Just because you are friends with many people who have +1'd a particular pop star's page, doesn't mean that such results just be weighted more if they are irrelevant to your query.

Of course, we expect their algorithm to improve in the future so perhaps they really will become "most relevant." Right now though, Bing in some ways is a more accurate search engine.

In addition, this is paired at the same time with the obnoxious "not provided" keyword that appears in Analytics when they are signed in. I would say Google has made its fair share of mistakes in their integrated strategy.

@Colin Cronin

Colin, I think your criticism is largely on point however the critical mass of people, the average every day computer user isn't going to even notice the change happened. They certainly aren't going to switch to Bing and it's awful UI either, regardless of it's accuracy. The only thing that might move people away is if they can't find what they are looking for and they get frustrated with it. I think that is fairly unlikely.

Keep in mind, you and I are not the average Google user. The average Google user doesn't even know search engine land exists. Many don't even know what a search engine is. That ignorance is Google's greatest lock-in / strength.

@Avinio maybe Google+ is not going away, but it is not going anywhere neither...

@social_media_uk If Google really want to success in social networks, then they should buy...Twitter? ;)

@Avinio In my view, Google has the most powerful social network, their search engine. It just seems that Google+ is the wrong way to do it.

I think Google+ Hangouts are starting to catch on for collaborative sharing & brainstorming among organisations. Not sure that it will catch on as a social network on the scale of facebook though. Our organisation doesn't have a huge community base on G+. We spend most of our resources on Facebook & Twitter, and a little on the new Pinterest.

The organisation I work for have considered it but as our audience is mainly younger, we wonder if it's worth the effort if everyone is still on Facebook. We have yet to check out Hangouts, which may be a cooler way to communicate with partners and stakeholders. I have however, seen many good examples of brands utilising Timeline to great effect.

Very interesting, Scott! Have any businesses or brands started using Google+ in your area for SEO purposes? I've noticed posts are getting indexed almost immediately.

What's Google +?, just kidding but no. Nathan, you have been added because you likely have gmail and + users can add gmail contacts to their circles

Wonder if, as internet speeds go up, the hangout will be THE thing for G+. Being able to share and work on a document at the same time now is pretty cool as well.

We think the Hangouts are pretty awesome as well - especially since you can easily share documents or a screen without having to send a link, sign up, etc. Pretty much just join and go! Have you participated in a lot of Hangouts yet, Larry?

Nope, very little user take up in my neck of the woods (Glasgow). It's just too similar to Facebook and poorly laid out. FB's Timeline is a much better innovation than Google+ imo.

I've recently had a influx of people adding me. Although I'm not sure why since my participation is scarce at best.

Great post, good to see an article that actually looks at what Google is trying to accomplish with Google plus. The mainstream press keeps hammering Google as failed Facebook replacement. That's short sighted, Google has much bigger plans. :-)

I think every web site owner should create a g+ account and connect it to his site, even if - for now - s/he wouldn't want to post updates or network at g+.
