The Admin Panel continues to elude me.  I have switched both of my two personal pages to TImeline as a preparation to deleting one of them (because having two is creating confusion), but I cannot get an Admin Panel to show.  I was able to access the Admin Panel for a business/events page I had tied to my unwanted second page, but now that this business page is deleted I am no longer able to see my Admin Panel for either of my two personal Facebook pages, despite having switched both of them to TImeline.  I really must delete the weaker, less visited one in order to link a new business page to the stronger and far more developed one, but am getting nowhere.  Please advise.  I need to boil everything down to one good personal page and build the business/events page back up from there, but I'm afraid I have confused Facebook.  I should add that I have eliminated all but one email address and password for both pages.  Mark425

Mark425 Hi Mark. By personal pages, do you mean profiles? Facebook profiles don't have admin panels. If you're referring to a Facebook Page that you use for personal rather than business reasons, make sure that you have at least 30 Likes — admin panels aren't displayed on Pages with less than 30 Likes.

jennifer beese Thank you for the quick reply, Jennifer.  Is a profile then just my picture, my friends, some info about me?  In other words, is a profile what millions of people may mistakenly be calling their Facebook "pages", as I apparently have?  If so, how do I delete a profile I should have never created?  I have a Facebook "page" (or profile) in my name, and a second one I wish I had never created that is in my name plus one initial.  That's the one I want to get rid of.  Then, I will attach the new business/entertainment page to my other page/profile.  Am I making any sense?  The one that has the extra initial has to go, and certainly it has far fewer than 30 likes on it.  Thank you again for your answer.  It is already a great help. Mark

Mark425 It's very possible that people have mistaken Profiles for Pages. Facebook Profiles are generally personal and feature updates, photos, and videos of you. Additionally, people must request to add you as a friend and wait for your approval.

When creating a Profile, you just sign up using your first and last name (http://www.facebook.com/r.php). Creating a Page involves a bit more work (https://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php).

By default, Facebook Pages are public and people need only to Like your Page in order to interact with it. Therefore, a mutual relationship isn't necessary.

If you'd like to delete one of your profiles, you can learn more about that process here: https://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=224562897555674

I hope that helps.

jennifer beeseThank you again, Jennifer.  I believe that is going to help very much.  Before I go through with it, should I perhaps link the profile I'm going to delete to a second email address?  Both the good profile and the bad one are linked to the same address, and I don't want to inadvertently nix them both. As it is, I think Facebook is sometimes confused as to which profile it should show.  I am "Mark" in one of them, and "W Mark" in the other, with the same last name and same email link.  Thanks so much for your patience.  Mark425

Mark425 Having never deleted an account, I'm not sure exactly how it works. Do you use the same login for both accounts? For safe measures, why not change the email for the one you'd like to delete — that way you know there won't be any sort of mix up down the line.

Mark425 5 pts

jennifer beese I've done what I can and am going to wait a while to let the deletion take effect -- so far it hasn't.  When I log onto Mark, it still shows the pictures and Timeline for Mark, but the address and email link for "W Mark", so there is still some confusion.  It may just need time.

jennifer beese Excuse me, by "address" I meant Account or Profile name.  So, you go to my Profile Page, which is supposed to say Mark, and it says W Mark, but the pictures and timeline are right -- email link is wrong.

Is there a way to have a events calendar app on your FB business page? We have classes we want to promote but with Timeline, all we can seem to do is add 'milestones', which is not what we want to do. I can't find an app that works. Anyone have a lead for me?

Brit at Sprout Social 33 pts moderator

JLSW Hey there! Facebook allows you to add your events to a tab. Click the '+' to add a new tab on your Page and select 'Events' from the drop down. Is that along the lines of what you were looking for?

I've also found simply "sharing" a post doesn't show up unless you want a long list of shares by yourself. I like to post info I find interesting for my business and will "share" with my business page, and it doesn't show up. I have to go to the page, cut and paste into the status...and if there's a photo involved, the timeline program will change my lead photo and I have to go in and straighten that out. Not user friendly if you as an admin actually use it.

The one thing I don't particularly like is the activity tracking being public now and no way to hide it. I have a client who has a seasonal theatrical production and there is a huge gap with "one" person on activity because the show is just in late spring/early summer. Anyone know if there is a way around this?

Gary in Asheville Hi Gary, I find this a bother as well. Have you find a solution to how we can not let the public see the pages we have liked as a business to be visible on our business page timeline? Regards, Mike

Timeline is a great development, the best tip I've read so far... Don't let the better layout, look and organization of your "timeline" page overwhelm you. Yes, its now become a page you would like to get your readers/followers to visit, but keep in mind, 90% of these folks will still, likely only see your posts in their FB stream... Thoughts? http://www.facebook.com/GoGoConsulting

Thanks for your article Sam. It's important businesses make the changes you've pointed out to their timeline before it goes live on the 30th because otherwise the whole page won't look right.

What I think is interesting is the implications of timeline for businesses though - such as the end of 'landing pages' - though you can link to apps - and the fact that timeline and milestones encourages more time spent on the page, and more about the history of the brand etc, whereas before it was all about realtime.

You might find this post of interest http://379.at/bbGz discussing these changes and how businesses can make the most of them.

LindsayDier Hi Lindsay, I agree with your point about the end of the 'landing page'. I'm not a business owner but a digital marketing student and have to create a business page for a company. Does building a facebook app simulate a landing page? Where users have to 'like' the page to enter and add content/photo's etc. I wanted to do a photo competition but require users to 'like' the page in order to upload a photo and be in with a chance of winning. Any advice from all will be hugely appreciated! Thanks (Great article Sam!)

Tom Copeland Hi Tom,

The app page simulates the landing page, so you can restrict what content viewers see until they like the page, just is no longer the page people land on. So if you were to search in Google for example, it would direct you to timeline. But you can direct users to the app page in other ways from distributing the URL from twitter, or on the main timeline page. If you've not seen this already it has a lot of useful information:

Hope that is helpful. Good luck with your competition!Lindsay

Thanks so much for this article. You make it so simple! I was working on my new look yesterday and this morning I can't find a way to go back to the "preview" look so that I can publish. Any suggestions?

Brit at Sprout Social 33 pts moderator

Hi Michelle! Are you using Facebook as yourself or as your Fan Page? If you have not yet published the Timeline, then using Facebook as your Fan Page will revert back to the old layout. If you're using it as yourself, then you should be able to preview and edit it. Hope this helps!
