Today, Twitter announced that iPhone and Android users will begin seeing Promoted Tweets — which have been purchased by advertisers to spark engagement — in their mobile timelines.
Previously this ad format was limited to desktop and mobile web versions of the social network. Initially, Twitter will only allow you to display ads to your followers and they will appear near the top of timelines. Over time, the program will expand, which will allow marketers to reach people that don’t follow your brand.
It’s also worth noting that Promoted Tweets will only be displayed when relevant. If an individual sees an ad that isn’t relevant, he or she can dismiss it with a swipe.
Twitter plans to rollout Promoted Accounts — which help to suggest accounts that people don’t currently follow — first, followed by Promoted Tweets. At the moment, these ads will not show up in the iPad version of Twitter.
By bringing Promoted Tweets to mobile timelines, Twitter hopes to increase visibility among target audiences. This is a great step for the company and could really benefit any business considering advertising on Twitter.
