The navigation company TomTom has released an updated version of its iOS app, which now supports Foursquare.
While many standard navigation systems struggle with smartphones and location-based apps, TomTom continues to move forward. The company first introduced support for Facebook Places in April, which made it easier and faster to find locations that friends have recommended.
Further embracing social media, and consequentially improving user experience, TomTom now offers full Foursquare support. Individuals only need to link their Foursquare accounts to their TomTom apps for additional navigation and check-in functionality.
Even people who don’t have a Foursquare account can access the navigation portion of the app. However, those individuals won’t be automatically checked in when they arrive at their destinations.
By adding both search and check-in features for Foursquare and Facebook,TomTom has added much value to its service. However, the company might have a hard time swaying current Google Maps users, as the app comes with a hefty price tag — a one-time $49.99 fee.
Although this doesn’t have a direct impact on business owners (unless you use TomTom), it does introduce social networking components to customers who rely on the navigation system. Additionally, it shows that businesses of all shapes and sizes can embrace and benefit from social media.
