Pinterest has just introduced its first major update since its newfound popularity. The redesigned profiles were announced earlier this week at SXSW and aim to improve discovery across the platform.

“I’m so excited about it,” said Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann. “We wanted to make it more beautiful … to make your profile different in kind than the profile you have on Facebook.”

The layout of your profile has changed a bit; your information is now displayed across the top of the page instead of along the left side — very similar to Twitter and Facebook profiles.

The activity list — that also used to reside in the left column — has been removed and replaced by an Activity tab in the navigation bar below your profile. Additionally a short list of people that have repinned you has been added to the top of the page.

Your pinboards have also received a bit of a makeover. Instead of featuring nine small images, you now see one big one and four smaller ones. The images will change and rotate out as you continue adding pins.

Although this is a relatively small change — compared to Facebook’s Timeline makeover — it can be really important if your brand uses Pinterest as part of your marketing strategy. The new design really makes a profile feel like a destination rather than a cluttered catch-all.
