Today Google announced an update that will make third-party apps more visible to Google Drive users.
When the search giant launched Drive, it also introduced the Google Drive SDK, which lets developers integrate apps with the service. With more than 100 Drive-enabled apps created, Google is now making it easier for people to discover, connect, and use them.
Previously the “create” button only displayed first-party apps like documents, presentation, and spreadsheets. Now, these will appear alongside third-party apps, which can be added using the “Connect more apps” link at the bottom of the menu.
After installing an app, it can be used instantly to create or open files directly from within Drive. If you’re a developer with an app already listed in the Chrome Web Store’s Drive collection, you don’t have to do anything to take advantage of this new feature — Google will automatically pull information from your existing listing.
For consumers and businesses using Drive, the update means Drive-connected apps are easier to access, making your workflow more efficient. Developers will also benefit as their work is now more visible to potential users.
