Familio is a simple, private, cross-generational platform for sharing precious personal content (or “moments”) with your family. Users can create a free account by entering a username, password and email address at familio.com. Once logged in, you can upload photos and videos (coming soon — inspirational quotes, kids’ artwork, and more) to your private online space and invite members of your family (through email) to view the content.
Once you invite family members, they will be able to see the content you’ve shared. Your invitees can also leave notes on your pictures and, of course, they can sign up for the service themselves and upload memories of their own.
You can always control who you invite to share your memories. In fact, Familio recommends that in order to preserve the unique nature of this platform, you only invite family members that you are closest to. “It’s not a social network,” says Iftach Yair, CEO of Familio. “Your family isn’t a social network. Connecting with your family using that model doesn’t work,” he says. Yair says that with Familio, it’s not about the connections you’re making, “it’s about the private, special moments that you’re sharing with trusted loved-ones.” Currently, the Familio platform is available, for free, through a web application, a mobile app for iPhone and Android, and soon, an app for digital picture frames that will display new moments as they are uploaded.
What Needs Does It Address?
Mr. Yair says that “our memories as a modern family have no clear space in the online world.” He says, “some of our most precious memories are buried in obscure folders on our hard drives, on phones where we don’t know how to download them, or on photo-sharing sites where we don’t even remember our passwords.”
Then there’s the whole issue of privacy — and who really has access to your content online. Yair is often asked, “Doesn’t Facebook have private Groups?” from people who assume that setting up such a group for your family on Facebook is an easy matter. “We’ve done a lot of research in this area, and we’ve never found even one person who has set up a private, secure Facebook Group for family members only,” says Yair. “With our app, there are no complicated privacy policies to worry about or set up. The only people who can see your memories are the people you expressly invite to share them.”
Another benefit of using Familio over other image-sharing networks like Instagram, is that Familio allows you to upload and store full-resolution images. “We don’t compress your images, so your family will always have access to your highest quality memories,” Yair says.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the Familio application is designed to be easy enough for the entire family to use. Yair says, “I’m proud to say that my 12 year-old daughter and my 91 year-old father are using Familio and participating in each other’s lives. That would be impossible on Facebook, due to age restrictions in my daughter’s case, and technical challenges on the part of my father.” With Familio, “your family is just one click away” says Yair. “You you just send or respond to an invitation, and you’re in!”
How You Can Leverage Familio
Although the Spotlight on Startups series is geared towards a business audience, all businesses are made up of people. Many of these people have families and are looking for ways to spend more quality time with them. While Familio can’t offer the gift of time, it does allow individuals an opportunity to share important memories and moments with members of their families. In other words, Familio is a product that’s right for just about everyone!
As the startup continues to evolve and look at potential partnership opportunities, the print-on-demand space is one that’s a natural fit for Familio. “So many family members want to print these images, not only as prints, but as photo-books and albums,” says Yair. “We’re definitely interested in speaking with companies that have an existing presence or interest in this space,” he adds. Feel free to reach out to Familio through its website, sign up for the web app, the iPhone or Android app, or connect with the brand through its Twitter account or Facebook Page.
