Pinterest already helps create value for businesses by giving consumers an easy way to save products and recipes they’re interested in, as well as the ability to track changes in price. Now the company is expanding to a whole new market: travel.
On Wednesday, Pinterest added a new type of pin called Place Pins which enable members to create board for places they like or want to visit. The digital pinboard platform just become a whole lot more useful for travel agencies, airlines, hotels, and even restaurants.
Pinners are already creating boards around vacations, special places, and sites they’d like to see someday. In fact, according to Pinterest, every day people pin about 1.5 million places, and there are now more than 750 million pins of these destinations on the platform.
“Place Pins were designed to combine the beautiful imagery of a travel magazine with the utility of a map online so you can share it with friends,” stated the company. “You can access them from anywhere on your smartphone, too, which means you can find new places on the go and even get directions!”
The new location-focused pins also include extra details like the address and phone number right on the pin so interested individuals can easily pull up useful information. Although useful for hotels and airlines, Places Pins can also be used to create tour guides for college campuses, neighborhoods, festivals, and so on.
You can see samples of the new pins in action through a collection created by various brands. For example, the Travel Channel created a board about an east coast beach crawl, the University of Michigan provided prospective visitors with a campus tour, and Andrew Zimmern created a BBQ-themed board.
