High profile Google+ users are being verified by Google and given a badge next to their profile name so you know they are the real deal. The authenticity badge comes in the form of a check mark that fades out the words “verified name” when moused over.

This new program was rolled out over the weekend for public figures, celebrities and those with a large number of followers in their Google+ circles. Google+ team member Wen-Ai Yu explains in the video below that this service will be introduced to others in the future.

There is no word on how Google verifies the accounts, but it is clearly part of their plan for web authenticity that includes that mandate that Google+ members use their real names.

Though the Google+ business pages have yet to be launched, one would hope that Google offers this service to companies as well when the time comes.
