Google has quietly rolled out a trending topics section to Google+, which will highlight the 10 most popular discussion items on the social network.

Similar to Twitter’s Trending Topics, Google+ is now aiding in content discovery. The new Trends section will appear on the right side of the page when you perform a search on the platform. When a trending topic is clicked, it will launch a search query and you will be able to view all mentions of that topic.

From there, you can filter through the results of mentions by people and pages, Google+ posts, or Sparks – which is a keyword-based news feed.

Google has also introduced the ability to search within your posts, your Circles, or the entire network. This is particularly helpful when you’re looking for a specific topic and don’t have the time to browse leisurely.

It’s too early to tell if these updates will have any impact on Google Search results, but it’s great for brands and businesses as it will help consumers discover the content you’re sharing on Google+.
