In 2011, Facebook offered users the ability to write and read recommendations for locations listed on the social network. Now the company is testing a new Recommendations tab on its mobile site.
Facebook added the “Recommend This Place” feature to Places Pages to encourage visitors to share thoughts about particular locations. These recommendations are also posted to the author’s Wall and News Feed of his or her friends, giving businesses with Facebook Pages more exposure.
The company is bringing the feature to mobile devices so users can learn what friends and others think of Places nearby. If Facebook continues building out its mobile Pages with social recommendations, it could challenge location-review services like Yelp.
Recommendations are available for Pages that are associated with an address. If you’d like to enable Recommendations, add an address to your Page’s Info section. Currently Recommendations can only be accessed from m.facebook.com and not Facebook’s mobile app.
We expect that this feature will eventually be expanded to other Pages, such as consumer goods and websites. Until then, local businesses and restaurants can provide their fans with another way to interact with the company and spread awareness among their networks. Additionally, you can also use “Recommend” as a call-to-action in addition to the Like button.
