Until today, one thing that was missing from the new Timeline design was the ability to write and read recommendations for Facebook Places.

In 2011, Facebook introduced Recommend This Place, which encouraged consumers to write about their experience at a local business or location. When Timeline rolled out, these were no longer visible.

Facebook will now display recommendations in a box below friend activity on Timeline. It will also include a prompt for people to write their own recommendations. Keep in mind that recommendations are only enabled for Pages that are associated with locations — only Pages with an exact address in their About sections will be eligible.

In some cases Facebook has prompted users to write recommendations after Liking a Page, but this hasn’t been consistent. With all the other features and boxes on the Page, it could become difficult for visitors to see this option otherwise. However, Timeline is still relatively new and so we expect Facebook to continue tweaking the layout.

Personal recommendations play a major role in decision-making. By encouraging your fans to share their thoughts, you’re not only inviting them to interact with you, but you’re also creating more exposure for your business — recommendations are also posted to an individual’s Wall and News Feed of his or her friends.
