Facebook provides advertisers with a number of targeting options, and now the social network wants to make sure that you’re using them properly. To help ensure that your ads are reaching the right audiences, Facebook appears to have added targeting suggestions.
Regardless of platform, your ad is more likely to perform better if it’s displayed to the people who are most likely to be interested in your product or service. By targeting an ad to specific groups of people you’ll be able to customize your ad so it’s more personalized and appealing to the audience you’re trying to reach.
Facebook understand this logic and currently offers several targeting options, including location, gender, age, relationship status, and so on. Additionally, admins of Facebook Pages can also target people who have Liked their Page, joined their group or event, or who have used their app in the last 30 days.
Now it appears that Facebook is helping advertisers select their targets, helping those who might be overwhelmed by the number of options. Now when you create your audience, the company will recommend targeting suggestions based on the content of your page.
The example provided — originally discovered by Or Fialkov — shows a post from CNN with recommended targets already inserted below the Create Your Audience section. Based on the screenshot, it looks like you’re able to disagree with Facebook and remove a suggestion by clicking on the “x” next to the target.
Facebook hasn’t made any sort of official statement regarding this feature, so it’s very possible that targeting suggestion are just a test. However, if they’re found useful by advertisers, we don’t see any reason why the social network wouldn’t make them a permanent addition to its ad dashboard.
