Today Facebook announced the rollout of Cards, a new kind of Gifts product.

Facebook Gifts allow consumers to purchase digital goods for their friends. Shuttered in 2010, the company relaunched the service after acquiring Karma, a mobile gift-giving service in 2012.

Instead of having several cards for multiple retailers, Facebook Cards are tangible, reusable gift cards that allow consumers to keep multiple balances from different retailers on the same card. For example, an individual could have $11.34 at Jamba Juice and $75 at Target on the same card’s balance.

After purchasing a gift for a friend, that individual will be notified instantly about his or her gift and will receive a Facebook Card in the mail a few days later. As soon as the Card arrived, it can be used at the retailer, or retailers, chosen by the gifter. The next time that person receives a Facebook Card gift, it will be automatically added to his or her existing card.

Partners for the initial rollout include Jamba Juice, Olive Garden, Sephora, and Target. It’s not known which other companies will be signing up, or how your business can get involved. U.S. Facebook members will be the first to receive the feature, which should begin rolling out in the next few days. We’ll keep you updated as more information is released.
