Publicly traded companies like Google and Facebook are not charities. Their primary objective is to earn a profit for shareholders.

Facebook rules and guidelines read like stereo instructions to me....

My take on this change is simple, it's a matter of common sense, don't over overpromote your business in your cover and honestly no one should done this even prior to this change and I don't care if Facebook told us or not, me not telling someone not to shot himself doesn't equal me implying that he should do it.

Furthermore, say you are a older newspaper company and you want your Facebook profile to feel more vintage and you take a photo of a newspaper from an angle, apply some filters to give it that aged look, what then? are you eligible for page removal just because there is a 100% text in your cover that's related more with design then it is to promoting? And if you're not eligible for removal because it's a photo, then is it ok to print out a page with a blue background, a 100 bolded, red, impact fond that says "90% OFF ALL ITEMS IF YOU LIKE AND SHARE" take a photo of it and set that as a cover? And we get back to common sense... again my take on this not to get too worked up about this change.

If however some believe they need to remake their covers then I got news for you, you should have done it even before this change.

I'm confused about this.  When I look at the Facebook cover on Sprout Social, I see lots of text if you include the graphics that contain text.   Do graphics with text  count toward the 20% ?

Hi Charlotte - Yes, graphics and logos that contain text will count towards the 20%. The policy doesn't go into effect until tomorrow and it appears as though Facebook has not pushed their text overlay editor live quite yet. We'll be making updates to our cover photo accordingly.

Brit at Sprout Social Thanks so much!

Not so "rarely enforced" it seems :) Facebook is getting more serious about protecting its screen capita and making sure brands don't get on Facebook covers and timeline image posts...

Hi Jay! I believe Craig is correct. The rule applies to cover photos (whether or not you choose to promote it).

Either way - a lot of people tend to use the cover photo as "prime advertising" space

I'm kind of confused. So does the text limit only apply if you plan to promote your cover photo as a promoted post? Or it applies either way?
