Did Twitter actually say that this was being rolled out to non-businesses so they can essentially buy more followers, or are you putting words in their mouth? Are you sure they're not just moving to a self-serve ad model like Facebook? Anyone can buy Facebook ads, which can be directed at any URL--even a personal profile, yet you don't say Facebook ads are now available to non-brands so individuals can buy more friends (there is only a slight difference-Twitter doesn't differentiate brand pages and personal profiles *yet*). This doesn't seem like a well-thought out assertion to me.

CarlaPRiseman Hi Carla, here is what AllTwitter reported: "The company has started to roll out 'Advertise On Twitter”'pop-ups to select profiles when they visit Twitter.com, encouraging users to 'grow your followers and help them spread the word about you'."

From the messaging provided, it seems that growing followers is an aspect, but it's not clear if this is the only motivation driving the rollout. We'll be sure to update this post as soon as Twitter releases more information about the initiative.

jennifer beese  CarlaPRiseman  I did not sign up for a popup, I received an email invite

jennifer beese  CarlaPRiseman I don't think the intent is for *individuals* to grow their followers. I think it is for small businesses that don't have the $25K to spend each quarter to advertise too. NO ONE who isn't a business is going to pay for followers. Well, I can maybe think of one egomaniac, but that's another story entirely.

As an aside, I didn't receive a popup or an email, I just noticed a "Twitter Ads" in the drop down profile menu, but only of the account I use for business.

CarlaPRiseman Right now, it's very hard to say who's receiving the invite, Carla. From what AllTwitter reported and Heather (comments below), it appears that non-business accounts/individuals are receiving them.

However, Twitter is still testing the rollout so it very well could be exclusive to small businesses or all-encompassing a la Facebook ads. We'll just have to wait and see at this point.

jennifer beese I just got the email invite to Twitter ads. All of the testimonials are from business owners. As I suspected, this is very clearly not targeted at individuals who simply wish they had more followers.

I have an invite and not a huge following, signed up for it yesterday just to test it out, some interesting features, not as targeted as facebook ads though sadly.

forfeng Hi Heather. I'm a bit curious about this. Do you have access to Promoted Tweets/Accounts or is it a different line-up of offerings than businesses?

jennifer beese Access to to promote up to 5 selected tweets, promoted acccount (i.e your box profile shows up in the who to follow box on the left and targeting by country and or city region. I was taking screen shots this morning of it and was trying to put a post together about it
