Microsoft Acquires Enterprise Social Network Yammer
After weeks of rumors, Microsoft announced that it has officially acquired social software startup Yammer for $1.2 billion.
Yammer is an enterprise social network — a secure communication and project management tool that brings employees together inside a private social network.
There are no details on how Microsoft plans to develop the service moving forward, although it did state in a press release that “Yammer will continue to develop its standalone service and maintain its commitment to simplicity, innovation and cross-platform experiences.”
Microsoft appears to be sticking to its corporate roots (unlike Facebook and Google) and will offer the service alongside Microsoft SharePoint, Office 365, Microsoft Dynamics, and Skype — not bad company to be in, especially if you’re part of a corporation.
We think Yammer will continue to be a valuable collaboration tool in the workplace, regardless of whether you’re part of an enterprise or startup. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft plans to monetize the service, and if that will have any impact on usage for current customers.

Hmm, another "standalone acquisition." I remember a lot of people were upset when Facebook bought Instagram. Even though FB claimed that Instagram would remain its own entity, a lot of people were (are) scared about what Facebook might do to Instagram. I wonder if people will react the same to this acquisition.
