Yes! Couldn't agree more that a good social media manager needs to have a thick skin. So often I see companies hiring people that are sweet and bubbly so that they can be nice to fans/followers, but these people can sometimes not know how to react when an angry fan starts making personal attacks - social media/community managers have to be unfazed like a customer service representative, while also maintaining a politice facade.

@AdamBritten Spot on Adam, they do need to have a great personality, but without the ability to deflect negativity and not take it personally, they will struggle to be rounded.

Thanks for commenting on the post guys. Agree with the 100 char point in twitter, I always aim for 120 or less. And of course, I always reinforce the need for top class writing.

Writing skills are absolutely essential in social media management... not to mention, being able to convey your message in 140 characters or less! I think it's also important to find someone who can write in a voice consistent with your brand and doesn't rely on canned responses. Injecting that spark and personality into customer interactions is what's going to keep them coming back!

Great point, Bill! Writing status updates that allow for easier retweeting or quote tweeting is a great way to increase the likelihood that your content will be shared.

Being able to communicate on Twitter in 100 characters or less may be better...leave room for retweets

Excellent writing skills is number one - knowing how to write specifically for social media (along with good grammar and spelling) and how to engage with fans through the written word is imperative. You can teach someone about the rest, but it's incredibly difficult to teach someone how to write well.
