The Google +1 button has been implemented on more than 1 million websites, and now it can be used on millions of mobile phones and tablet computers that visit those websites. Google has updated the +1 button to make it work on Android 2.1 and above, and Apple’s iOS 4.0 and above.

Android powers popular mobile devices like the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy, and iOS is the mobile operating system used by the iPhone and iPad. Together, these two platforms accounted for 72.2 million of the 107.7 million smartphones shipped in the second quarter of 2011, according to a study by analysis firm Canalys.

The new, mobile +1 button was announced in a post to the Google+ social network by Google’s lead project manager for mobile, Punit Soni.

This is an additional incentive to add the +1 button to your website’s repertoire of social sharing buttons. Now that mobile visitors can share to Google+ using the +1 button, you can expect to see some better performance. Though Google+’s growth peaked in July, a couple months after the social network launched, +1 buttons are now present on 8% of the top 10,000 sites on the web.
