Talking of hashtags I use them mostly to encourage conversation with a group of people so the 140 characters is not taken up by all the @names on the discussion...can encourage people to join in as a bit easier. Its popular with both impromptu and planned discussions

You can find a hashtag for just about any subject these days. If you have a specific interest, you can simply look for a logical hashtag and follow to your heart’s content. News, politics, hobbies, it’s all out there. But what if you want people to follow you, your business, event or interest? Do you just throw it out there and see if someone bites? Have you ever thought about putting it in the local paper?

A growing number of newspapers are now featuring a Twitter feed, focusing on a specific local hashtag, on their Websites. As their Websites get more and more traffic, the chances of people seeing your Twitter comments and links increases, even outside the Twitisphere. The trick is to work that hashtag into your Tweet in a way that doesn’t look out of place. Most newspapers use the community hashtag (#yourtown), but other media (radio, TV, etc.) might use their own.

Before you start adding that local hashtag to everything you Tweet, remember that kid that cried wolf too many times. Eventually, no one paid attention to him and his flock became a wolf’s personal drive through. Promote your business, event or interest, but try to have something interesting to share and try not to fill the feed with your avatar, else you get your own tag; #spamboy

Great idea Sean - including a hashtag from your local city or town in selected, pertinent tweets. The local paper in Nanaimo, for example, has over 40,000 unique visitors on their website every month.

And they prominently display a Twitter Widget on their home page displaying the #Nanaimo hashtag. Which means tweets including the #nanaimo hashtag have the potential to be seen by thousands of visitors everyday!

Now that's smart social media leverage )as long as it's done in moderation, as you mentioned).

Thanks for your comment!

Hi Ric - are you referring to measuring engagement rather than simply using social networks as PR tools?

As soon as your tweets and FB updates start looking like non stop sales pitch or business is when your on line presence looses it relevance (and followers attention). It's a giving and sharing that leads to relationships.
